Friday, April 30, Home & Garden Television and The National Trust for Historic Preservation visited the Bodie Island Lighthouse on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. In a special ceremony, they presented a check for $25,000 to the National Park Service to be used towards restoration of BILH. I had the opportunity to attend and we were given the chance to see the entire segment which will be aired publicly this coming week. I think it was beautifully done, and hope many of you will get a chance to see this. The HGTV air times are: May 05, 2004 11:30 PM ET/PT with repeats... • May 06, 2004 3:30 AM ET/PT • May 23, 2004 12:30 PM ET/PT For more information, and a list of the other 11 properties... http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/shows_ram/article/0,,HGTV_3877_1568299,00.html Judy

Very cool! Thanks Judy! Though I will say, it amazes me that two of the showings are in the middle of the night. Do they SLEEP at HGTV?

A nice piece, although it was only about 6 minutes about the light. I guess I had hoped the entire show would feature Bodie Island, but some is better than none.

Would you believe that little bit of time took four days to film? Yes it was short, and it will be aired two more times as noted. If you watch the remainder of the 11 properties, they will also get the same amount of time. I think it was well done, and touched on many important points. The photography also gives you a well-rounded view of the beautiful secluded Bodie Island Lightstation. Don't forget that $25,000 towards restoration went along with this, and the publicity has already helped to bring in more. So, I would say that the few mins. is worth it's weight in gold! Judy

How did they divide up the $1,000,000? It appears to not have been into equal shares . . . Someone must have done very well if Bodie only received $25k.

I can't figure out how much each site got. I'm still looking around on Google. I have to search the names of the sites with HGTV "Restore America" on google. That should help. I, too, am curious. Though it looks like there are several buildings that are in SERIOUS need of help. They may have gotten a bigger share. Let me see what else I can dig up. Anyway, it is GREAT that we got this money. We still need every cent we can get. Judy, do you know what the money is planned to be used for?

And as of this morning, HGTV is still running an ad about restoring the light that doesn't mention the show but encourages going to their web site and thence to Restore America. Every dime helps. I say dime because way back in the 20th century, in my youth, the school children of NC were encouraged to contribute dimes for the acquisition and restoration of the surplus Battleship North Carolina. The program was educational and a big contibutor to the ship's move to Wilmington where it's still a nice attraction. Perhaps those who are now grandparents can proposes a similar education/contribution program for today's kids. It leaves a life long inpression.
