Plum Island is perilously close to falling into the sea. The generator house has already been lost due to erosion. "If the erosion is not stopped, it will one day claim the lighthouse." "After 21 years of abandonment and neglect, there's now hope for the 1869 lighthouse on the west end of Plum Island." What's Being Done to Save the Lighthousesee www.longislandlighthouses.com/saveplumisland/index.htm View the following Topics: - History of Plum Island - History of the Lightstation - What's being done to save it - The Goal - How you can help - How you can stay informed Public support is needed for this project. If you'd like to help in any way, please call the East End Seaport Marine Foundation at 631-477-2121 or email them at lighthouse@peconic.net. You may visit their site at http://www.eastendlighthouses.org/PlumIsland.html These websites and quotes are products of 'Wildbird' Bob Muller at his LI Lighthouse site www.longislandlighthouses.com/ , and the East End Seaport Lighthouse Committee under the direction of Merle Wiggin www.eastendlighthouses.org/index.html . Please express your support both here and at these websites. We will be documenting the public support in order to raise the awareness of the local, town, county, state and federal governments. The East End Seaport and Marine Foundation has a successful track record in rebuilding Long Beach Bar 'Bug Light' in 60 days! see - www.eastendlighthouses.org/BugLight.html On behalf and as a member of the Committee, I want to thank you in advance for your support. ------------------ Long Island BOB

Wow. Did Bob make that sound official or what? :-) I would like to add emphasis to the part about letting your support be known. The big obstacle in this effort is the USDA. We need to let government officials know that we want this done, or they'll just blow it off. There's a great deal of history at that site, and it needs to be preserved. ------------------ Bob Muller Stony Brook, NY wildbird99@aol.com www.longislandlighthouses.com

Since I'm one of the "Stooges" from L.I. I felt I should post here as well.
First of thanks to L.I.Bob for alerting the forum to the plight of the Plum Island Light.
Second, I would like thank the "Wildbird" for getting a website up so quickly. As usual he has gone above and beyond to provide us lighthouse folks all the news and views.
Being partial to the "home lights" here on Long Island I will to ask you all to do what you can to help us.
KEEP THE FLAME!!!

A couple of notes on this topic... I spoke with Merle Wiggin (East End Seaport Director) today and he had some encouraging news. The Coast Guard Commander has agreed to have the light recommissioned if the local commercial traffic deems it beneficial. Of course the "commercial traffic" in Plum Gut primarily consists of the Cross Sound Ferries. The Cross Sound Ferry company happens to support local lighthouse preservation and we're confident they'll back the project. Merle has already spoken with them. Newsday is eager to publicize the project once it gets underway. And I'll be seeing a NY Times reporter on a Lighthouse Safari this weekend. Plus we're putting together a press packet and working on our PR strategy. We're working on a magazine article, too. So the publicity angle should go well. The big stumbling block in this project is the government. The best way for people to help is to call their congressman and/or senator and demand that the government preserve this part of American history. It resides on federal land. There's a law that requires the feds to preserve historic structures on their property, but apparently there's a loophole that adds that it only applies if the project is consistent with that agency's mission. That's how the USDA's been skirting the issue. Congressman Forbes is on board, and we're gong to work on Lazio next. Any help with talking to federal, NY State, Suffolk County or Southold Town officials would help. If enough people care, this will get done. If the public decides to continue to allow the government to sandbag, it'll be a tough road. ------------------ Bob Muller Stony Brook, NY wildbird99@aol.com www.longislandlighthouses.com

To make your thoughts and feelings on saving Plum Island Lighthouse known to your elected federal officials, you can get the name and address of your U.S. Representative here www.house.gov/writerep/ . To get the name and address of your U.S. Senator go here http:www.senate.gov . Even if you don't know who they are you can look them up from either site. Although I strongly suggest sending a letter as being much more effective, you can email most of them from either site. Whenever I write to a Senator or Representative in a state not my own but where the lighthouse is located (Florida for instance), I make sure to mention the fact that I'm a tourist visitor to their state (in my Florida example, a frequent tourist). I always get a response from Louisiana officials, nearly always from other states. I follow up responses with brief letters thanking them and asking to be kept up to date on the situation. I occasionally get a follow up, too. It's been my experience that letter writing efforts pay dividends in lighthouse restoration. ------------------ Keepin' the flame [This message has been edited by LamarB (edited 03-07-2000).]

While doing some Christmas shopping, I stopped out at Palmer Vineyards. They make 3 Lighthouse wines (red, white, & rose) with part of proceeds going to Lighthouse Restoration. store.yahoo.com/palmervineyard/index.html Here's the appropriate label for this lighthouse: ------------------ Long Island BOB

The Plum Island article brought in some nice responses. I even heard from a descendant of some 1880s keepers. I'm hoping to get some copies of old photos and such from her. Every little bit helps. Right now, I'm trying to get all the paperwork together to get the light on the National Register. We'll get it done. With some support and perseverance... ------------------ Bob Muller Stony Brook, NY wildbird99@aol.com www.longislandlighthouses.com

Merle Wiggin will be interviewed by ABC next Tuesday for a Sunday News show. When I have the date and time it is scheduled to be shown, I will post it here. We have also received some encouraging news on who actually owns the lighthouse! It is now being triple checked, and I will keep you updated!

Official visit is now being set up with Newsday, Congressman Forbes, and other notables for the last week of March or the first week of April. Merle Wiggin will be on ABC this Sunday between 6 and 7 am on LI Perspective. Set your tape machines if you're in the NY area. Coast Guard has agreed to reestablish Plum Island as an 'Aid to Navigation' after we restore it!

Merle Wiggin got his chance to present our case for restoring the Plum Island Lighthouse, this past Sunday on LI Viewpoint at 6am. The 10 minute question and answer session on NY ABC TV provided a good Forum to put the onus on local politicians and the USDA to provide some answers. In addition, having the tape of the local broadcast might be a way to stir up some additional (regional or national) interest. A visit and tour of the lighthouse with the USDA, and Congressman Forbes is being scheduled for March 24 or April 7.

We finally made it to Plum Island Lighthouse on Monday, after many false starts and cancellations by the USDA. The good news is that we were pleasantly surprised with the exterior condition of the lighthouse. It looks like, it has been recently painted (trim), and maybe even power washed (Do you think the delays were caused by trying to spruce it up?). The interior is what you would expect peeling lead paint on walls (probable asbestos in the basement) and ceiling, falling walls and ceilings but no signs of vandalism. We got to go up it the lantern room by a series of old wooden stairs. Several of the panes of glass were cracked but not broken. Exterior windows of the lighthouse were intact (no broken glass), and painted on the outside. There is no apparent water damage.
The major concern is still the erosion on the land surrounding the lighthouse. Some of the former employees of Plum Island Disease Center had the foresight to stockpile some boulders from a recent construction project, which we were also able to review with our consultants from Costello Marine and Chesterfield Associates. The consultants are now preparing a plan for the movement of the boulders to a strategic placing ala Montauk LH.
I was able to take about 20 minutes of digital video, which we’ll use, for reference as the project progresses. Next step is to get an agreement with USDA, and come up with a cost plan

Sounds like things went well Bob. Glad to hear that some might have spruced up the outside of the place. Hope all goes well with the USDA. Plum Island is a very picturesque.

Thanks for the compliment but I must defer to accepting it on behalf of the East End Seaport Lighthouse Committee. Merle Wiggin is the Chairman who has assembled a group with a wide variety of expertise to meet the challenge. I am merely a small spoke who has become the spokesman on this Forum. Also known to this Forum is Bob Muller (Wildbird) who is playing an intregal part of this process as well as many others who are to numerous to mention. It's only just begun but we're beginning to see the beacon of light in the distance. Thanks to everyone for your interest and I'll continue to keep you updated.

Congratulations Bob, to you and your group, on progressing to this important step in your efforts.
Others in the forums are also involved with restoration efforts with lighthouses near and dear to them. While all publicly owned lighthouses need our attention and support it must be truly exciting to be involved in the beginning stages of of a lights restoration.

The Army Corp of Engineers called Mr. Wiggin yesterday, and said they were dredging Sag Harbor and expected to excavate about a $ million of rock. They asked if they could put in their bid for removal of the rock to deliver it to Plum Island Harbour. This process will be happenning over the next 2 years. Now, Mr Costello of Costello Marine said he has an extra crane he's not using that he can leave on Plum Island for a couple of years. And he might have some downtime starting in September. Now all we need is some approvals(red tape) and an agreement with all the above parties, and we're on our way!

In a Newsday article today, the new Director of Plum Island USDA Facility. David Huxsoll, stated, "he wants to promote openess with the community and he wants to preserve the islands' history including the miltary fortifications from the Spanish-American War and the LIGHTHOUSE."

That's great news Bob. I really enjoyed the article on Plum Island in Lighthouse Digest this month. Some good pictures in there as well.

Sounds like you guys need to get real friendly with Mr. Huxsoll. Sounds like he is the person you have been waiting for to really get things moving. I hope that with all the pieces and parts you folks have now assembled that the Plum Island Light is on its' way to becoming a visitor attraction!

The lead volunteer group for Plum Island is now the Long Island Chapter of the US Lighthouse Society. All the same people are involved under a different organization. The rocks from the Sag Harbor Inlet are now involved under much environmental controversy although the bottom line is 40 boating moorings in the vicinity of the breakwater. The Army Corp of Engineers has promised to get us all the rocks we need from different locations so there is no change as far as that part of the project. Still there has been no personal contact with the organization from the USDA. We are about to take an offensive approach.

Bob, maybe an aggressive approach instead of an offensive one? Sounds like you guys are going to really jump-start the USLHS Chapter there on Long Island! I'm sure the USDA will eventually get the correct team work philosophy and everything will shift into high gear.
Congratulations on the new USLHS Chapter and for having the courage to take on this wonderful project.

Merle Wiggin had the opportunity to visit with the new Director of Plum Island USDA Facility, David Huxsoll last week. Mr. Huxsoll seemed very interested in our interest, and Mr Wiggin left a copy of a working agreement between the Long Island Chapter of the US Lighthouse Society and the USDA."foot in the door" - a fitting 1000th

Mr Wiggin had a second meeting with Mr Huxsoll on 8/29 for 2 hours. He presented the draft of our letter to USDA. Mr Huxtsol said he would contact his Director at USDA and get back to us in a week. We will be revising our draft to include our latest meeting with Mr Huxsol and sending it to USDA to keep the pressure on. Stayed tuned!

David Huxsoll attended the 10th Anniversary of Long Beach Bar "Bug Light" and in his remarks to the 125 people who attended the event; he stated that the "USDA would send a letter this week requesting Historic status, and that he would totally support the restoration and maintenance of Plum Island Lighthouse." - I have his remarks on digital video tape!
