I think one of the unique items about the older pieces was the lightning rod. I understand that the reason they stopped making them was because they broke easily.
However with the new technology and the styrofoam boxes to protect the lightning rod, it would be a neat addition to a new light.
It might be a good idea for an upcoming Society piece. That way collectors would be assured of receiving something unique.

That is a great idea to make the Event Piece or Society Piece even more special...

Count me in ! I like the idea, but only the first 1500 of each piece should have the lightning rod ! Ok, just kidding But I do like the idea of putting the lightning rod back where it belongs !
And also I hear it was Bob Younger who was instrumental in having the lightning removed from the line some years ago, so maybe this door to the past could be reopened now.
From the Fog Signal Building, where I just got done salting the drive way. ( the last time I was late in getting the salt down Tim and the Yugo ended up down on the beach in the loose sand and I had to dig it out by hand by myself )

Great idea, Patty!
I believe that the reason HL got away from the lightning rods is because of shipping damage to the rods, but that was back in the packaging peanuts days. With today's FFFP (that's form-fitting foam packaging, HAL), that concern is gone. Hey, if HL thinks they can get away with those boat masts on the 7-foot Knoll, why not new rods? But let's make them straight and rigid (no candle wicks) this time, please!
From where lightning can strike twice,

I think that Patty has a great idea here. With as much detail that goes in to making a HL, the addition of the lightning rod would be a natural. However, what effect would this have, if any, on the value of the older pieces with rods. I wouldn't think this would have much effect but you never know...

If anything it'd enhance their value. Imo, given a choice between two otherwise identical pieces, I'd take the one with a lightning rod.
The Return of the Lightning Rod is a most excellent idea. Perhaps these can be designed as replaceable - each model includes one or two extra soft plastic LRs.

Count me in on the lightning rods!
I think it is a great idea to bring them back. What I can't believe is that they haven't been brought back already. It seems to me that the technology has been around, at least for a year or two, that would have made lightning rods feasible once again. Anyway, it is a great idea. Bring back the L.R.'s in '99!

Count me in on the "return of the rods"! I think that it would be another boost to the line.

Lightning rods are a great idea. Perhaps they should be produced in the following manner: 1. Only 25% of the 10,000 pieces should have a lightning rod hole in the ventilator bulb. 2. Each lightning rod piece will have 2 lightning rods shipped with it in a small packet within the original packaging. Included with the packet would be the optional "BYHL Stick'um". 3. The purchaser of this lightning rod piece would have the options of displaying the piece with or without the lightning rod. The proud owner could leave the rod out, put the rod in, or utilize the "BYHL Stick'um" and put the rod in permanently. It would seem most practical to just put the rod in without the "BYHL Stick'um." That way the rod could be removed for storage or shipping without taking the chance of breaking it off. The rod could also be made of a flexible material rigid enough to stay straight but pliable enough to bend without breaking. ...All kidding aside, the lightning rod idea is a good one that will generate more interest amongst the current serious collectors. The question will be: "How do we distribute the LR pieces and to whom?" That's the word from the East Coast!

I think some of the intrigue of the old pieces is getting a lightning rod. My first was Boston Harbor, and while the piece was not as detailed as the later HLs, the LR made it special. I would like to see some flagpoles on the new HLs and let the originals stay unique by their LRs.

When I attended my first event when Bill (I am pretty sure it was Bill, not Bob) was there, I asked how I could replace the missing Lightning Rod on my Grosse Point. He told me to go into my bathroom, cut one bristle from my hairbrush, and stick it in the hole (no glue.) It worked very well, and this seems to go along with John's idea about making the new lighthouses with a hole and including several rods in the package. I too like the older lighthouses with the lighting rods and would love to see some new ones.

GREAT idea!! I too would love to see the lightening rods brought back....a little detail that has been missing for too long. With HL sticklers for detail I forsee this added to the line in the not so distant future.
