In a discussion with other wackos at the '97 Reunion we got to talking about lighthouse colors. One knowledgable wacko said he always buys HL's with red on them first because their secondary market value increases faster (I haven't checked to see if this is true or not; it may be one collector's perception).
What do you think? Do you find the more colorful HL sculptures more appealing? Does red in particular offer extra appeal?

Lamar, I am drawn to the red ones in particular. I wouldn't say that I would by an HL simply because it is red (I buy them simply because they are HLs ). However, I have never seen a red lighthouse that I didn't like, and they look great next to the basic non-red lighthouses in the curio. ------------------ -Art

I favor the HLs with red on them. Yet again, I buy them all anyway. Something about the color red that attracts me. We don't have that many LHs with red on them around my area. The only one that immediately comes to mind (at 0700 hours) is Sankaty Head on the Island of Nantucket. I'm hoping HL will produce that one and Great Point on Nantucket some day. ( Note: I'm not counting the ones with a red roof on the adjacent buildings) That's the word from the East Coast where it's only 40 degrees at the moment and slightly overcast. I like a variety of colors. Lots of them have white houses, red roofs, white towers. So a variety in the color and style of towers is nice. Also in the style of the light, screwpile, separate tower, tower/light incorporated in the house, etc. Variety is the spice of life.

Personally I don't pay particular attention to any one color. If I have to pick a favorite style, I would have to say that I favor the brick and stone structures.

I think that the color Red has an appeal to the eye. It draws attention (That is why so many fire trucks are painted red). Many of us have stated we would like to see Ship John Shoal created as a Harbour Light. The color, I am sure, has something to do with that, along with the unique structure itself. I personally like this color on lighthouses.
I also am very fond of the tall towers with alternating colors of black & white. The mighty Cape Hatteras, Cape Henry, Bodie, Tybee, Cape Lookout, and on and on.... How can you argue with that?
Wishing I had more of the colr of money in my pocket,
-Todd
