Nearly every day we post links to stories about lighthouses on our Facebook page. As some of the members here aren't on Facebook, I'm going to try to post the best one of those here each day. Here's the first. This one is a video about the restoration of Halfway Rock Lighthouse in Maine. http://www.wcsh6.com/entertainment/telev...house/289937556

Thanks for sharing, Roland. Great video. Don't imagine the CG or USLHS would have sanctioned skeet shooting from tower . . .

Port Clinton is a cute little light that was located within the marina property. You could visit it but it sounds like it will now be out where it can be easily seen. My failing memory says that many years ago we had dinner with the Brady's and Sostaric's at a restaurant that was either the former keeper's quarters or was located where the keeper's quarters were.

I was in Port Clinton for a short time a few years ago and tried to find the lighthouse. It was still at the marina but having only an hour or so, I was unable to locate it. I was more interested in seeing Marblehead anyway, and that was definitely worth the time and effort. Marblehead remains as one of my favorite visited lighthouses, even though it wasn't open to climb when I got there. Beautifully restored lighthouse.

Many years ago the kid and I were traveling down the east coast and OBX (to see Cape Hatteras after it was moved - supposed to be still moving but they got in too much of a hurry.) We happened to be at Hoooper Strait on a weekend they offered the overnight, but unfortunately we had already set up at our camp. Too bad because I think this would have been a great experience.
One thing that would concern me - "a drop-in river cruise". Does that mean they drop you in the river, drop the boat into the river, what?

My question on the MRASS.... If a boater can see the lighthouse,he can turn on the foghorn. Now, isn't the foghorn there because you can't SEE the lighthouse???

The thought that comes across my devious mind about the MRASS system is what about the folks that just want to be evil and turn on the system in the middle of the night or middle of a nice clear day? Nothing to stop them.
Article says how far away you should hear them but not how far away you can activate them.
