So...why should I subscribe to this magazine?
Seriously...do they also support LH preservation with the proceeds?

I thumbed through a copy of it while on the Maryland Lighthouse Challenge and liked what I saw but want to know more of what it offers.

I can tell you that I read each issue cover to cover, and have saved every one of them!

It keeps me up to date with what is going on around the country in the lighthouse community. Plus, every issue contains photos or articles about people I know or know of.

The only other magazine that comes into my home and gets read cover to cover is Coastal Living .

Judy,

Can you tell me how many or how long has this publication been in existance?

That is the type of feedback I am looking for...really don't know anything about the magazine...imagine that!

BB, I would only be guessing if I tried to answer that. I'm sure there is someone here who knows the history.

It's a very good publication...though I have reservations about it. See the below thread to read them from last November.

http://www.lighthousekeepers.com/cgi-bin/forumscgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=45;t=000056#000000

NOTE: I am NOT trying to re-incite this issue (though I kind of see that still happening). I'm just trying to give Bob a fair and balanced view on this subject, and sharing some past commentary that can give him several viewpoints to make a decision.

Back OT...

If you want to see what the magazine is like before subscribing, you may be able to get a sample copy from LH Digest. They used to be able to give them out easily on the internet - just fill out a form. It was nice to "try before you buy," but it looks like that went down the economics drain. You may be able to get one by calling them, though.

Also, many lighthouses that are OTP (open to the public, my little acronym) have a copy or two lying around that you can flip through. I know that at Sea Girt, where I volunteer occasionally, we have a subscription. I've picked them up at NJLHS meetings, too.

It's a nice magazine...I just feel like it's in a little bit of a decline. Not totally bad yet...but not as bad as it used to be.

Keep in mind, ask me this about any of my passions, and you'll get a similar response. (Not a good idea to get me on the topic of cruise/passenger ships - I'll go on a QE2/Cunard tangent and tell you every little thing about the history of the cruise industry; or 4x4s - I'll go on a rant about how superior Land Rovers are for about a million years. Some of the various long-term members here can attest to this...though probably never out loud. )

I also look forward to every issue. I read it from cover to cover. I have saved every issue and have gone back to read some of the articles again. I have learned so much about lghthouses and their history by reading this magazine.

Lots of great feedback. I didn't mean to open up any old wounds.
I think I'll subscribe if nothing more to get more info about events and preservation efforts and read the articles.

It isn't a whole lot of money for the subscription...so if I find that I don't care for it...I can leave it for someone else to enjoy.
I usually will agree with anything that is done for a good cause and has interesting info regardless of who or what is in the pictures.

I actually "read" magazines too, not just look at the pretty pictures.

I like the magazine. Been getting it for 3 to 4 years now. It now comes out 11 times a year, it use to come out 12 times a year, but they had to cut back on costs. In addition to US lighthouses they also cover some around the world. Another feature is Lighthouse groups can send in their news.

I really like the magizine, I always read it from cover to cover and it's the only magizine I
don't through out after I read it.

It is definitely one of the most interesting. You never know who you are going to read about. Often a story is featured written by one of our very own WACKOs!

Bob, another terrific publication is the US Lighthouse Society magazine, The Keeper's Log. Get a membership in the organization; the magazine is different from LHD - fewer but longer articles which deal with specific lighthouses in great historical depth. LHD is published eleven times a year and The Log four. I read both from cover to cover and wouldn't think of getting rid of any issues. Each is very informative in its own way and, as mentioned already, LHD does feature a lot of pictures and occasional articles by the Wackos! cool

Bob,

I'm in basic agreement with the others about Lighthouse digest. It's a fine publication but it does have it's faults as most things do.

If you want to subscribe let me know and I'll send you a form that will get you a subscription at the same price but allow for a donation of $10 to the NJLHS. I believe the same deal is offered by other LH organizations.

I agree that you should also join the US Lighthouse society to get thier fine magazine as well. The biggest difference between the two magazines is that while Lighthouse Digest is pointed at the short informative story and done in a more consumer friendly manner the Keeper's Log has more in depth scholarly articles along with short informative ones.

They both fulfill a different need and complement each other not duplicate. IMHO.

The other magazine that is also informative is The Beacon put out by the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association. This and the other two certainly help expand our lighthouse horizons. I keep them all!

I also like the US Lighthouse Society's Magizine. They have some really good tours and
cruises. I met a couple from California who had been on the Cape Cod Trip and they couldn't stop
raving about it.
