Timbalier Island Light (1857) - Louisiana

Built on a low sand spit at the east end of Timbalier Island, the
lighthouse remained there for ten years before erosion threatened
its existence. In danger of toppling, the tower had its lens
removed in February, 1867, and stored in the keepers' dwelling.
The following month a hurricane struck that section of the coast
and leveled everything on the island, including the keepers'
dwelling. The keepers kept the temporary light going to the
very last, "barely escaping with their lives," before the tower
went over. They took refuge in an iron can buoy where they lived for several days.
