Does anyone know the definitive works on "Screwpile" lighthouses? Always had an interest in them as well as the Fresnel Lens

Welcome Kevin. I'm don't have a single reference devoted entirely to the Screw Pile lights, but I like the chapter in Michael Rhein's "Anatomy of the Lighthouse" that covers the technology of Offshore, Reef and Breakwater Lighthouses.

Welcome to the forums Kevin. You may want to try to use the search engine on the internet. Type in screwpile and you may be surprised at what comes up. Usually a lot of information. I came up with at least 36 sites, not all lighthouse related.

screwpile lighthouses as a search term narrows the focus to just lighthouses. The first two returns from a google search provided a complete history of the term from who invented it to modern uses. One of those hits was Sentinel press which publishes Elinor DeWire. She is a member of this forum also.

Hi there! laugh Welcome!

Marblehead, Mass. Lighthouse, you will always have a very special place in our hearts. ....We've made the journey as far south as New Jersey, as far north as Canada. Over 100 lighthouses visited.... and so many more to go.

Welcome to the group, Kevin!

Screwpile lighthouses are one my favorites, being a Virginian and within easy driving distance of Maryland. We've lost so many. Of those still standing, I guess I have a special fondness for Hooper Strait.

I also like the chapter in "Anatomy of a Lighthouse", and will add these to the list as well:

"Maryland Lighthouses of the Chesapeake Bay", by F. Ross Holland, Jr., and "Bay Beacons: Lighthouses of the Chesapeake Bay", by Linda Turbyville.

Of course, there were screwpile lighthouses in many other places besides the Chesapeake Bay, but these are the ones I'm most familiar with.

Again, welcome. Would love to hear about your lighthousing experiences!
