Thanks to the efforts of Bob Scroope (on behalf of the Long Island Chapter of the USLHS), a visit to the beautiful Fire Island light has been arranged for Saturday after the LI Regional event. There are a limited number of "climbs" of the tower also set up. Cost will be about $5 per person. You might also have to pay for parking, but this is not certain (parking isn't controlled by the lighthouse folks.)
We have also received permission to have a picnic on the grounds during the visit. We had hoped to find a place we could gather for dinner, but have not had any luck finding a location near the light. Being a Saturday night we also figure most restaurants in the area would not be willing to take on a large group.
Bob has spoken to some caterers about getting some type of picnic food. The best we have found so far is a sandwich box lunch for about $7 each. Bob is looking for other options.
Please sign in below IF you are interested in joining us for a visit to Fire Island. Would you also be interested in some type of picnic with your fellow Wackos? Do you have suggestions for other types of food if we can locate a supplier?
Thanks for your work, Bob. Hope to see all of you at the regional and also at Fire Island.
Dave

You bet we are interested. Count us in. We booked our flights last night and started organizing our days. It took a little doing but Roy will get his wish - to make it to all the Regional events this year. Looking forward to seeing everyone again. Carolyn

Dave, Bob et al - MJ and I would love to join the gang for the climb up the Fire Island lighthouse. One suggestion would be to buy grinders and soda for the folks attending or they can stop along the way and bring their own.
See you all soon, Ron & MJ (CT Keepers)

Jimmy,
Glad to have you join us. All are welcome, we would just like to know who is coming (either via post here or email to me) so that we can plan accordingly.

Thanks to the leg work of Bob Scroope, we have decided on what to do for our picnic supper at Fire Island. We have found a pizza place not too far from Fire Island. We will poll the group at the regional for what kinds of pizza is desired, and will call in an order. One of us will pick it up and bring it to the light for our picnic. We will also have soda and water (sorry, no beer on federal property). We will have an estimated cost per person, and will collect that at the regional to pay the bill. Hope this will work for everyone.
At the regional, Bob will also collect the admission fee for the light from those going, so that the docents don't have to spend time collecting from us (wouldn't you rather have them showing us the light??). Sunset will be about 7, so that will be a great end to the day.
Hope to see you there. If you plan to attend and have not signed in, please do so. Those who have indicated their intent to join us at Fire Island will be the first to tour and climb. At this point, we have made arrangements for a total of 30 tour spots, and have 23 people interested. If needed we can probably arrange for more, so please do plan to join us.
Dave

Directions are easier than it sounds, Jim. You need to add "go to Robert Moses Parking Field #5 and park on eastside near boardwalk entrance. Follow boardwalk to Lighthouse, about 10 minutes."

I should mention that MJ and I will have our eight-year old granddaughter, Lexis, with us so that makes 3 of us for the Fire Island Climb.

Lorna and I will not be making the trip to Fire Island Light, but will be at the Regional. A word of warning for the shy and those with young kids: Don't walk down to the beach to the south of the light (towards the ocean). That is a nude beach frequented strictly by those of the male persuasion. The most clothing worn is usually a baseball cap. On the other hand, if you feel like going for a dip, just bring a towel. You won't need your bathing suit. Bob

There are stories told of some of these beach people walking up to the lighthouse for a visit. And the one I always like is the school bus trip when the kids get to run down to the ocean after a visit!

I've seen more than my fair share of those sunbathers up by the lighthouse. It's those days you get more out of your lighthouse visit than you baraganed for. And I don't think that's such a good thing!

We're going to Fire Island directly after the regional. I just confirmed everything is still on for 3 tours of 15 people to climb. See me or Dave at Regional to sign up. We're allowed to bring food and softdrinks which we'll be coordinating at the regional. Bob

Spoke to Dave H on cell as the ferry was pulling into to Pt Jeff so Dave and Crew have landed. There itinerary for the day is Old Field at 9am, Eatons Neck at 11am and Horton Pt at 2pm. High seas has caused the Friday cruise to be cancelled but I'm sure they'll be hanging out at the Marine Festival in Greenport. Tomorrow, the Regional and Fire Island. See you there, Bob

Met the crew at Eatons Neck. The Caravan included Dave, Byran, Ken Reese, Judy Rath, McBees', Suzanne(Wiskeeper), Lorie & John, and more. Lookout LI the Wackos are hear. CG were great hosts at EN, except for climbing the tower which is still offlimits.

I would like to thank Bob Scroope for all his leg work to put together our Fire Island visit after the Regional. Not only did he arrange to have the super volunteers from the light open the lighthouse for us to have special tours, he also scouted the area to find a place to provide food for us. I know I appreciated the opportunity to visit inside this beautiful light and to climb the tower.
We had a wonderful turnout and beautiful weather for the outing. A number of "walk ups" also benefited from the light being opened. Thanks to all who paid to climb the tower we were able to make a nice donation to the Fire Island folks. Those that participated in the pizza picnic also helped lighthouse preservation, as I gave Bob the excess money to offset his purchase of soda and to add to the Cedar Point project of the Long Island Chapter of the USLHS.
For those that have not previously been exposed to this wonderful Forum Family of wackos, hopefully you gained a little insight into just how special a group of people we have here and will join us on our next adventure wherever it may be.

Belated thanks to Bob Scroope for the after event Fire Island get-together. I wasn't planning on driving out, but had such a nice time at the event that I wanted to extend the day. Thanks to Sue Brady, who decided not to climb, and let me take her spot. I have climbed several times in the past & didn't want to take a spot of an out-of-towner. Thanks to Bob & Marianne for the ride back to the parking lot at dark. Since I was traveling alone I would not have been comfortable walking the mile or so back to the lot in the dark unless I was walking with others. The event went quickly as I sat with the other Wackos. Particlarly enjoyed meeting and chatting with Laurie & her husband John. But I didn't win like Laurie did! It is fun to meet some of the people that I have been exchanging postcards with for years. 'Till next year, Donna
