Lighthouses in the Movies - 11/04/98 12:42 PM

All right all you experts, here's the question of the day and I'm looking for help answering it.
Since I've started collecting lighthouses I've seen an awful lot of lighthouses featured in movies. Just this weekend I saw 3.

Here's the start of the list.
1-FOREVER YOUNG - Point Arena,CA

2-The TRADEMARK for Castle Rock Productions

3-A lighthouse in Coupesville,Washington in PRACTICAL MAGIC. The witches actually live in the house. One scene shows the light actually working. Currently in the movies.

4-An Australian movie called UNDER THE LIGHTHOUSE DANCING(per GaryToth). Recently on cable.

So let's go! Add to my list. Correct my recollections.

The Light At The End Of The World with Kirk Douglas and Yule Brenner. It was based on a Jules Verne Story. The whole movie takes place in a lighthouse. Also Captain January with Shirley Temple.(has a Great lantern room scene)
There was also another old movie called Sh! The Octopus, a 1937 murder mystery which takes place in a lighthouse.
And not to leave out, there was an old Superman episode called "The Haunted Lighthouse" which was really great.

Not sure about this, but while visiting Marshall Point Light in ME this summer I recall someone mentioned that it was used in a scene in Forrest Gump. I believe it was Tom Hanks who ran down the long boardwalk toward the lighthouse.

Not the movies, but the computer game 'Return to Zork' has a lighthouse in it - replete with crazy keeper.

If you are successful, at one stage in the game you must climb the light tower and go out onto the cat walk. Something 'special' can happen while you're out there.

Throughout, various characters mention that unless the keeper can find some 'illuminites' he'll lose his job.

Fwiw - this, the 4th in a series of Zork games, is an hilarious adventure and highly recommended. The first three, circa '85-'87 and now classics - were text only.

This is away from the original topic too,
but Olivia Newton-John did a music video recently
at a lighthouse. I've not been able to idenify it.

The light in NEEDFUL THINGS was, I believe, Pt. Atkinson near Vancouver, British Columbia...Pigeon Point, CA in the Richard Gere thriller FINAL ANALYSIS...and YAQUINA HEAD, OR was in both a bad 1982 comedy called HYSTERICAL and an episode of TV's long-gone Nancy Drew Mysteries...and a Maine lighthouse is in Stephen King's THINNER but I'm not sure which one it is...then there's a British one in a thriller called PAPERHOUSE...and Tillamook Rock can be glimpsed in THE GOONIES and maybe even KINDERGARTEN COP...

Just saw The Truman show again (on video) Monday. There is a lighthouse shown near the end shining over the "ocean". Can't tell if it is an actual lighthouse or just computer generated. Probably the latter.

Am now watching a show, "Steamboats, The Fall River Line" on PBS. Showing the route of the Fall River boat and just saw Rose Island and Port Judith lights!

This show is being broadcast during a pledge drive and may soon be coming to a theater near you!

Thanks for the update on the "Steamboats" Show Mombo. Elizabeth and I drove to Fall River during the past reunion and toured the Battelship and Destroyer there. We then went to the Mariners Museum and enjoyed all the history about the Fall River Line. I cant wait to see the show.

Anyone watch "Martial Law" last night. Right at the end they showed a brief glimpse of a Victorian era light. Possibly Point Fermin?? Looked to be on a bluff.

I was only half paying attention to the show as I was at an "adult" gathering and participating in assorted discussions at same time. My lighthouse radar kicked in and I'm pretty sure there was a light.....

Learning Channel re-broadcast "Storm of the Century" (October 1991, New England Coast, especially Gloucester) tonight. Minot's Ledge was shown early in the program with waves crashing all around it. Now that's one place I sure wouldn't pick to be in a storm, or even no storm!

Color of Money - Tom Cruise, Paul Newman and Elizabeth Mastrioni.
Tom Cruise walks into the Atlantic City Convention Center from the boardwalk and there is a LIGHTHOUSE(on an island with buildings)blinking in the night from the ocean. Is this real or a hollywood creation?

Re: Lighthouses in the Movies - 06/16/99 07:34 AM

Bob,

It's been many moons since I've seen The Color of Money. I don't remember the scene, so I can't say if this is the actual backdrop or cinematography, but Absecon lighthouse in real life can be easily seen from the boardwalk in Atlantic City. The camera angle would tell me if it's the real thing in the movie. Guess I'll have to rent that one again.

While we're at it, has anyone noticed the lighthouse in the VISA commercial featuring the elderly lobster lover? Just caught a glimpse of it tonight ... believe it's Pemaquid Point.

Re: Lighthouses in the Movies - 06/21/99 02:59 AM

A couple days ago I saw a Maryland tourism commercial on TV. Had my head down for some of it so may have missed some others but definately saw Thomas Point. Lots of people were singing 1 800 MD IS FUN.

Also this evening on History Channel, the Great Ships episode dealt with the Coast Guard and mentioned Ida Lewis and later Cape Disappointment. Now there may have been more here too that I missed as I was doing other stuff at the time.

Rented "Somewhere in Time" last night. Had not seen it in years. Felt like I'd visited Round Island. Is she in that good of a condition today? Beautiful setting. Did not realize she protruded out so far all by herself.

Who has actually been there? Long way to row from "The Grand Hotel"? Like strolling from Currituck to Bodie.

Robert,

We chartered a private boat up close to her last summer. It is in excellent shape right now, not like it used to be (almost fell over in the 70's, had a huge hole in the side). There is a shot in the "Gallery" pages of it.

General's Daughter has a significant role for what looks like a wooden lighthouse in the film. The movie is set in Georgia just out side Ft McCallum. It was done in Savannah so I'm guessing ...

The lighthouse in the Australian movie, "Under the lighthouse dancing", is Macquarie.

Also in "The general's daughter" you see Tybee Island light several times during it's renovation.

Now a question I have is what lighthouse is in Jaws 2? The lighthouse the kids kept sailing their boats to. It looks really run down. I can't find it in any of my books.

Re: Lighthouses in the Movies - 07/01/99 08:18 PM

On the cover of the screenplay of Stephen King's "Storm of the Century" there is Portland Head, and in the movie there is a scene where a light (it looked like Peggy's Cove, but was in Maine) was knocked over by the waves. It alos showed the villain strolling around a Fresnel Lens (the lens stayed still, but the light inside it moved). Also, I happened to stumble upon a website a while ago that was about an Australian soap opera called Harbour Lights.

That's about all I can recall right now,
Stephen

Attempted to photograph Horton Point LH yesterday.
My first obstacle was the State was paving all the roads that lead to the LH.
After finding a back way in, I found an independent film company set up on site filming a movie.
Rumour has it that 'WILDBIRD' is starring in this production!!
Needless to say with all the equipment set up, it was not a good photo opportunity day!

Re: Lighthouses in the Movies - 09/08/99 05:30 AM

Here's one I don't think has appeared yet in this thread. I was watching a late night monster movie last Saturday entitled "The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms" and, lo and behold, the creature began its reign of terror by appearing in upper Canada, capsizing a ship off the coast of Nova Scotia, and then destroying a lighthouse somewhere on the coast of Maine (unidentified). The structure that was destroyed was obviously a model, but the first few pictures appeared to be of a real lighthouse.
