Congratulations Heather! - 07/21/00 05:49 AM

Our 4-H County Fair starts next week. Heather has been a 4-H participant since she was 10 and has several projects this year. Today was the first day of pre-fair judging, and Heather had a great day. Her basket was selected as Champion for her class and is the State Fair entry from our county. This is her 4th year of making baskets, and she has had two Reserve Champions (runner up) and 2 Champions.

This is her Champion / State Fair entry basket:

In the picture below, Bill is admiring Heather's 1998 Grand Champion / Best of Show basket. (For whatever reason, this judge refuses to give both Best of Show & State Fair entry to the same person.)

Needless to say, Susan and I are very proud of Heather's achievements. Tomororrow brings judging of her food preservation (pickles) and her two photography entries. Her salon print (single picture) is of Pemaquid. We'll see how they do.

Dave

Great Job Heather! The baskets are beautiful. Just by the pictures, and I am sure in person they are even more beautiful, you have true talent. Keep up the good work.

Congratulations Heather!

You have a talent in making baskets!

That is something I have always wanted to learn.

Do you take orders? I like the one that Bill
is holding!

Just a thought:
You could make up some baskets, and have your parents sell them at the next reunion!

Maybe Nantucket Lightship Baskets? Heck! You could sell them yourself.

Congratulations Heather. You make beautiful baskets. I wish you luck in the other competitions you have entered. You are a very talented lady and I'm sure you have many people on these forums who would love to purchase some of your work. Thanks to Mom & Dad for sharing your accomplishments with us.

Re: Congratulations Heather! - 07/22/00 04:41 AM

Nice job Heather! They are certainly beautiful baskets!

At least one member of the Hannum family can win prizes!

Liverpool, New York where I lived for many years was at one time very famous for its willow baskets. Many villagers made them and although they are no longer made several of the older homes in town still have willow sheds out back. The willow was harvested locally and first had to be cured, or whatever, in the sheds. It was an early cottage industry for many residents and very hard on the hands. As a kid, I remember driving through town with my folks and seeing the baskets displayed on many of the homes' front porches. My Mom had a laundry basket at one time but it has since disappeared.

The following site (apparently a 2nd grade history project) features some scenes of Liverpool including the Willow Museum which is housed in one of the former sheds. The shed was donated some years back and has been relocated, refurbished and now serves as a memorial to the willow basket industry. http://www.liverpool.k12.ny.us/LCSD/SecSocStudies/MyCommunity/SecGrIndex.html

Thank you for the kind comments, which I will definitely share with Heather. Thanks for the links about the Nantucket Baskets & Willow Baskets Lamar and Mombo. BTW, Sue, cheap shot!

Heather did pretty well today, earning Honors for her single print and Reserve Champion (runner up)for her pickles and for her photo board. Her photo board had at least 3 lighthouse pics on it (Marshall Point, Currituckand another which escapes me). The judge specifically commented on her Marshall Point picture, which featured an interesting contrasting/overcast sky.

Heather said her single print, Pemaquid Point, was down to the final 3. The judge really liked it and she felt she might get one of the top spots but that didn't work out. Honor group in this category is still a pretty good showing because of the competition.

Heather... again, congratulations! Don't know about the pickles (sweet or dill?) but the basket is beautiful.

Note: I would be more than happy to be an official taster of your pickles if they are sweet. Yummmm!

Hi Heather,
Just got back home late last night and read about all your great endeavors. Thank you for knowing how to keep so many American traditions going. In this day and age, young people don't seem to enjoy doing the activities that keep one busy and industrious. Great hearing that you are being recognized. Keep it up!!

Did you get your license?

Love ya,
Derith

Congratulations Heather . If your basket is any indication of your talents you will knock them over with your pickles and photos. I enjoyed talking with you Saturday night at Rosemont. Good Luck with all your future events. Hope to see you next year at the next Harbour Lights event.

Re: Congratulations Heather! - 07/31/00 06:23 AM

Here is the picture Heather used for her Salon Print. This is an 8x10 that must be mounted on a 16x20 mat.

Her photo board had 10 pictures, including another Pemaquid shot, as well as pics of Currituck, Marshall Point w/ a really neat overcast sky, Saugerties, the bouys on the side of Lighthouse Depot, a parrott, an Amish farmer havesting with horse drawn equipment, the old Customs Building dome in Savannah, a really neat pineapple fountain from either Savannah or Charleston, and finally, a pic of an antique tractor & wagon and a massive pumpkin display.
