American Shoal, blue vs green.

American Shoal, blue vs green. - 05/15/00 02:55 AM

Where was the change from blue to green bottom felt made? Mine is blue and number 1315. Lets narrow down the field. Last blue and first green.

Of course, there is a chance John knows the answer already.

Re: American Shoal, blue vs green. - 05/16/00 03:48 PM

Since there is a #1992 blue and a #2103 green, only those blue ones spotted or owned higher than #1992 and the green ones spotted or owned lower than #2103 need to be posted. That way it can be narrowed down better without having to sort through all the other posts.
When we get to the middle ground there is the very real possibility that it may not be an exact number for the change from blue to green, but it could be since the factory could have done a specific amount while waiting for the green felt to arrive. Since there are some that are rejected and pieces that might be broken the change probably isn't exact like from 2000 blue to 2001 green..... only time (and collectors) will tell.

Re: American Shoal, blue vs green. - 05/17/00 06:29 AM

The Bradys went lighthousing in Indy tonight to find out the range of green felt American Shoals in the area. I had already seen one in the 2200 range on the Southside of town, so we headed to the Northside of Indy. The first store we stopped at, which by the way is where a Bill event will be this summer, I discovered a green felt variation with the number #2103. I now own the said American Shoal for the good of the cause (pictures) plus of course I had to have it. The window opening has narrowed with Tim's blue #1992 to the green #2103 in the images below with his older brother blue #14.

Right here on our stage together for the first time I present to you... blue #14 and green #2103. I just realized how old I am, most of you reading this don't even know who Ed Sullivan was much less actually saw his show.

The following images were achieved by shooting the lighthouses over a mirror with a close-up filter on the lens.

Re: American Shoal, blue vs green. - 05/17/00 02:11 PM

Since the first 3000 have the Postage Stamp included, does that make a 3rd variation?
blue w/ stamp about 2000
green w/ stamp about 1000
green w/o stamp about 3500

Thank you, Paul, for that "really big shew!"
(Note: show purposely misspelled. You had to watch Ed Sullivan to know why.)

Re: American Shoal, blue vs green. - 05/19/00 05:49 AM

Yes there are more of that variation available, all you need is a photo program that enables you to clone/copy & paste and my image of the two American Shoal Lighthouse flags and you too can have that variation... plus you need the skill level that Mark has acquired cloning parts of one image onto the other.

If you take the 14 from the left flag and clone it between the 2--3 on the right flag, you can come up with the #2143.

Lets see if you can figure out where he got the pieces to clone the U in AMERICUN from……

Paul, are you suggesting that image has been tampered with ? Sure it may look adjusted, but it's as genuine as .... uh .... the .... picture of Ocracow Island lighthouse

That picture was authenticated by a mister A. Dobe

A recent sighting of a blue felt version with the number #2019 has closed the window even more. It was actually the lighthouse that Harbour Lights had on display in their booth at Rosemont. The fact that I spotted it first was probably due to the fact that I saw it first.

2019 - Blue... spotted by me
2050 Green... spotted by mel

A window of 31

There goes my 2000-2001 theory!

Re: American Shoal, blue vs green. - 07/09/00 10:42 PM

Is the American Shoal piece a 6500 editon or a 10,000 edition?
Posted By: Webmaster

Re: American Shoal, blue vs green. - 07/10/00 12:28 AM

American Shoal has a limit of 6,500 -- not 10,000 despite what the flag says. All flags will read 10,000. But again, only 6,500 wlll ever be produced.

Re: American Shoal, blue vs green. - 07/10/00 12:35 AM

I get to quote myself....
Quote:
engbrady Saint posted 03-18-2000 06:22 PM
Harbour Lights had planned to release American Shoal last year, probably mid year. That is why the year is 1999© on the flag.

This is just a guess on my part but I suspect the bases (water portion) were already done and the hold up was probably in the tower. Then when Harbour Lights made the decision to reduce edition sizes and rather than destroy the bases already done, go ahead and use them. This would save both Harbour Lights and the Collector (you) money. This is just my theory but I bet I am real close…….

As for the folder still having the date error, I suspect that these were already produced… including the American Shoal stamp and the stamps inserted in the folders at the same time as the West Quoddy, Hatteras, Admiralty, and Sandy Hook stamps.

I was told later by a very reliable source that my theory was correct.

I have what appears to be the rarest variation of American Shoal: green felt, with stamp. :-)

Re: American Shoal, blue vs green. - 07/10/00 03:10 PM

I have one of those also, Art.

Sean what makes this variation a little different... Bill stated at the Louisville club meeting recently that he thought that this was first time the felt was changed on a lighthouse, that wasn't caused by Harbour Lights changing the manufacturer and the country it was located in during production. California to Canada to Malaysia to China... It is the only non-original 17 (grey to green) lighthouse to have a felt color change.

The blue felt that was used, was supposed to go on the International Pharos lighthouses not American Shoal but the factory didn't want to hold up American Shoal's production so they used the blue that they had on hand instead of waiting until the green, which was supposed to be on all of the American Shoal lighthouses was delivered to the factory.

I have all of the manufactured from both Malaysia to China variation lighthouses and have planned to shoot pictures showing some of the differences for a while. I just need to block out some time to do it and get it done.

Sean, why don't you just go buy some green felt? That way you could change the color on yours depending on your mood.

Just funnin' with you all here. Reading about all these variations is very en"light"ening.

I recently spotted an American Shoal with Green felt numbered #2050 at a store here in Indy. If it is still there the next time I stop in I will take a picture of it and add it to this post.

Blue #2019
Green #2050

It's getting closer!
