Avery Point, CT - Like it or leave it? - 12/07/04 02:21 AM

Thinking about this for a short while and would like to know from forum members if you Like it or leave it, and more important why? Curious as to who will buy it and who won't. Take a look and let us all know.

I will definiitely buy this one as I like what's been done. Looks well done and definitely a worthwhile buy to commemorate the work done to save this light from the Doomsday list. Not to mention that it's a New England light (I'm prejudiced)!

I will buy it.

Many of us here on the forum donated money to help this light. If memory serves me correctly we bought a brick or two in honor of Bill O'Brian.

I'm in. I'm on autoship, Avery Point is a CT light and that's in New England where I live, and it has a power boat attached instead of a sailboat.

I love the fact that lights within driving distance are being offered.

Re: Avery Point, CT - Like it or leave it? - 12/07/04 07:16 PM

I'm not just going to buy 1 but will buy 4!!!
1 is for me and my collection for the same positive reasons already listed here.
The other 3 are for my grand children for whom I have bought a commerative brick. I think it would be nice for them to have th LH that goes w/the certificate for the brick and just possibly make them future LH Lovers if not HL buyers. Also they may remember "Grandpa". laugh laugh

One question: I just purchase the HL's as they come out. No autoship, no special dealer, no special # BUT, for this purchase I would like to get consecutive #'s!!! Any suggestions, advice as to how to go about accomplishing this? confused

Thanks and a HAPPY HOLIDAY greeting to all the WACKO NATION!!!! smile smile smile

Rick,

I'd say the best way to do this would be to go into a store that you use for your purchases of HL and talk to them.

You could probably get them to do a special order of 4 for you and they could probably request sequential numbers.

I'd also suggest asking somebody in NELL. I got an an e-mail about a store in CT that is taking orders and donating part of the sales to Avery Point. They could probably get you 4 in sequence also. I just checked the site and the info is not there so I'd contact Ron Foster or someone else from NELL and ask them the info on that store.

Rick, call up HL on the 800 number, ask for customer service and explain your desire to them. I am pretty sure that they will send a "special order" to the dealer of your choice, who would be glad to cooperate because of the extra $108.00 in his pocket.

Re: Avery Point, CT - Like it or leave it? - 12/08/04 12:25 AM

The Avery Point Lighthouse Society (APLS) is very excited and pleased with the Harbour Lights HL316, and the very low edition size. Being a Co-Chair of APLS and having worked for the restoration of this lighthouse I am definitely buying it. Not only one but three, one for each granddaughter who also will have bricks in the walkway.

Gail Grillo, the owner of Marvel Home Decorating in New London, CT has pledged $5 from each HL316 she sells to APLS for lighthouse preservation.

APLS, in an effort to say "Thank You", is providing a special packet to Marvel Home for each purchaser to receive with each HL316 they purchase through Marvel Home. This packet from APLS includes:
1. An Official APLS circular pin
2. Free Membership in APLS
3. Avery Point lighthouse magnet
4. Photo image of Avery Point Lighthouse as it appeared shortly after it was built by the U.S.C.G.

If you want to order this piece (due out in late January 2005) for a special person, and order it through Marvel Home, you will receive a very nice post card image of this Harbour Lights piece in front of the Branford Mansion at Avery Point, CT. This may be wrapped up and given as a gift to let the receiver know what you have purchased for them.

You may reserve your HL316 from Marvel Home, help lighthouse preservation, and receive the extra "Thank You" package by calling Marvel Home Toll Free at:
1.800.272.4741 or call the regular number 860.443.8437

Ron,

Thanks for the info. I could not find the e-mail with the name of the store.

I just called and placed my order.

Rick I mentioned your request to the lady I spoke with and she said that it would be no problem to get you four in sequential order since that's they way they get their shipments usually.

Re: Avery Point, CT - Like it or leave it? - 12/09/04 03:13 AM

Just wanted to thank everyone who is going to purchase the new Avery Point piece. Especailly those of you who have contributed to the restoration project or purchased a brick. This piece is not only a great representation of the lighthouse but also a tribute to those small group of individuals who have volunteered their free time (weekdays and weekends) to help save, restore and relight this piece of maritime history. For those who aren't going to purchase the piece, so be it; maybe you don't know what it is like to give over five years of your life in saving a wonderful lighthouse. A special thanks to Harbour Lights for helping to relight history.

Just thought I would let you know that Gail at Marvel Home is really excited and surprised at all of the calls they have been receiving from collectors ordering (reserving) Avery Point Light (HL316). I stopped to see her yesterday (Saturday) and she said the calls have come from as far away as California and Texas.

Remember to request the special post card she has if you plan to give this as a gift at Christmas or anytime prior to the late January release. She will gladly ship you this post card if you request it when you order.

This is one which could have easily been the annual Collector's Society "free gift", minus the boat, rather than an LE.

Re: Avery Point, CT - Like it or leave it? - 02/11/05 07:05 PM

I just got my Avery Point yesterday.

It looks very nice and the extras are great also.

I do have one question though- inside the box along with the tent card and the other paper work there is a printed page thanking me for purchasing a Race Point Lighthouse Harbour Lights Model. It goes on with info about staying at Race Point and say you should mention that you purchased the HL replica of Race Point.

Is this something that was done in error by Harbour Lights or by the people at Marvel Home Decorators. My guess is that it's something done at HL.

Did anybody else get something similar or did anybody else get a page thanking them for purchasing Avery Point?

I got the same thing you did, Dennis, and also am wondering about it.

Really like HL's Avery Point, especially since it represents huge preservation efforts!

Re: Avery Point, CT - Like it or leave it? - 02/11/05 08:23 PM

I talked to Kathy Dowling at HL Customer Service. The flyer shouldn't have said "Thank you for buying Race Point..." But it was intended to be included with all 2,500 of the Avery Point pieces as a special promotion for the Race Point Lighthouse.

I believe there is a discount offer for staying at Race Point on that flyer as well. Anybody got the language?

Sales on this one are brisk, but dealers still have a chance to order. A second shipment is expected in April which will probably complete the edition.

John,

It only says what I posted earlier. It doesn't say you'll get a discount or even what the price is. It just says please mention you purchased a Race Point HL.

Re: Avery Point, CT - Like it or leave it? - 02/12/05 05:58 AM

I picked up my HL316s today (one for me and one for each of our two granddaughters) and I have just scanned the Race Point Flyer Dennis mentions and sent it to John. I have difficulty posting images.

I like the piece very much. When I stopped today at Marvel Home they were very busy still packaging and shipping the many HL316s they sold.

Thanks to all of you who purchased from this dealer in New London, CT. You have helped raise funds for lighthouse restoration.

Hmmm? I still haven't heard one word from my dealer since last year. I hear people already receiving some of the latest pieces so maybe I had better give my dealer a call to see if there's some sort of a problem at their end.

Also got them consecutvely #'d (397-400) as I requested laugh laugh 1 for me and 1 for each of my grand children. Hope they eventually like them and become enthusiasts!
Thanks to Ron Foster and Dennis Wheland who suggested contacting Marvel Homes directly and a special thanks to Gail Grillo who was so nice in honoring my request.

I finally received my Avery Point last week. Harbour Lights did a nice job on it.

I've never been to Avery Point in person. From looking at the HL reproduction of it, I get the feeling that it's more monument than lighthouse. Did anyone else get the same feeling?

Re: Avery Point, CT - Like it or leave it? - 03/21/05 04:12 PM

Avery Point was an actual aid to navigation and the last lighthouse built in CT.
From History of Avery Point
Quote:
The campus at Avery Point was once the estate of wealthy industrialist Morton F. Plant. After Plant's death the estate was sold to the State of Connecticut in 1939. In the early 1940s the U.S. Coast Guard took over the site and converted it to a training station.

Avery Point Light was built in 1943/ It was operated as a private aid to navigation beginning in 1944, displaying a fixed white light later changed to flashing green. After the Coast Guard left the site in 1967, the lighthouse was extinguished and became the property of the State of Connecticut.
I haven't had the opportunity to visit yet and hope to in the near future. Like many of you, I participated in the brick fundraiser.

I received my HL Avery a while back, and I think it was beautifully done. Neat to see the finished brick walkway, too, and I love the addition of the boat. Mine is a very low number.

But what I like most about it is this...it is yet another wonderful piece from Harbour Lights that celebrates preservation efforts.

Don & All who have yet to purchase this piece. Remember that Marvel Home Decorating (the Harbour Lights Dealer in New London, CT) is donating $5 from every HL316 sold, to Avery Point Lighthouse Society for lighthouse restoration, so consider purchasing your Avery Point from them. At the same time you will receive the gift packet described in one of my posts above.
