New sign

New sign - 03/22/99 11:32 PM

I posted my wish for a new sign on the board the other day. I am a little surprised that no one else seems to want this. Personally I would welcome signs for the geographic locations, special pieces, or any other designation HL cared to come up with. The legacy signs are amoung my favorite HL pieces and my displays are in different rooms and display cases. Am I too wacko for wanting another fantasy piece?

I have both Legacy lights and find them to be great pieces. The only fault I find is they don't represent an existing or former lighthouse.

I would rather see HL produce a replica of an existing light rather than a fictious sign.

Just my humble opinion...

A new legacy light would make a good gift for Collectors Society members. There's probably a pretty good correlation between those who are members and those who would want a sign anyway. Besides, why should we pay extra to advertise the line in our curios?

IMHO, of course.

I also agree tht a new Legacy light would make a nice gift for members. Perhaps next year Harbour Lights could include a new sign as part of the membership package instead of the usual stuff.

Great Idea Mike -- the Society 'Gift' piece could be a new HL sign, featuring a REAL lighthouse (not the David Winter version)

Sorry Mike, but I for one don't feel this is a great idea.

First, for sake of argument, let's say HL would choose to use Old Presque Isle, MI lighthouse with the sign. I for one would be very upset that the Presque lighthouse would have not been done, as well as it could have been, without the sign. I don't think that I would be the only one upset about it, not by a long shot. I think this feeling would be pretty universal for a lot of lighthouses.

Secondly, unlike Bob's "a fictitious sign" comment, I think of the Legacy lighthouses as representative lighthouses that both illustrate and symbolize all lighthouses, not just any one in particular.

Thirdly, I feel that if they did another sign it would be unique from the first two, if only in the technological advances of making them, since the first two were released.

Fourthly, I don't like it as a gift, since I would want to purchase more than one, probably at least one for each of my different displays.

I agree with Paul that I would rather it not be a real lighthouse, nor would I want it to the gift. I would not mind paying to advertise the line in my curio's. I'd bet that most wackos don't really mind either as they have probably already shelled out for one of the existing legacy signs.

No signs please. My dishes don't have a sign proclaiming "Syracuse China". The name's on the bottom like the HLs. The Society gift should continue to be a "real" lighthouse!

I don't mind 'advertising' HL. However, I don't get much traffic through my home.

I agree with Mombo:

Who ever said anything about the Society gift? I believe I used the word "a".

How about a GLOW sign? New ones could be issued every 5 years or so to keep up with the wacko cabinet acquisitions.

John said "the" not you Art.
"Great Idea Mike -- the Society 'Gift' piece could be a new HL sign", John Chidester
Mike said "a" just like you and then John posted and changed the "a" to "the".
Either way I wouldn't want it as "a" gift, nor as "a" real lighthouse for my earlier reasons.

Whether "a" or "the" still don't want it. I mean, how much free stuff can we expect anyway. Sure wouldn't want to jeopardize the "real lighthouse" gift by substituting, adding a sign. By the way, what do you folks do with all the pins? Only have one so far and just plunked it in the cabinet with my HL's.

Re: New sign - 03/24/99 08:10 PM

What we use to display our pins and buttons is a wall banner. By wall banner I am talking about a strip of material, sometimes tapestry, about 6 inches wide and maybe 3 to 4 feet long. They usually come to a point at the bottom and have a pole or rod with rope or the like at the top and to hang it on the wall. It looks real nice hanging next to one of our cabinets.

As far as Harbour Lights creating a new "Legacy Lighthouse", I don't have any problems with that. I will say that it should be kept as a ficticious lighthouse and as in the past, a limited edition piece.

For anyone who hasn't had the opportunity to see a legacy light, it is adorned with illustrations of what life might have been like for keepers and their families and an explaination of such, on the back of the certificate of authenticity that came with the piece.

I also feel that it shouldn't be a gift. Mombo has a good point. How much free stuff can we expect to get from Younger & Associates? I think it is great that they do what they do for their collectors, but I am sure they can only do so much.

Make it and they will come.
