Rod/ No rod

Hi Art. I have been following the post for the HL pieces with & without rods, with great interest. This is something that I have wanted to know for a good while, but didn't know how to find out.
I have noticed a good number of discrepancies as far as a low number without a rod and a higher number with the rod. Is this a mistake or is it caused by replacement of broken pieces? How are you going to account for this in determining the actual cutoff of the numbering? And are you going to make your findings ( from this source & others )available? Thanks for your efforts in helping us all!

I think it was John that pointed out elsewhere that the pieces do not necessarily come off the end of the production process in the same order as the edition number would lead you to believe. A lower edition number could actually have been produced after a higher number.

Therefor, you really cannot come up with a clear cutoff point defined as being between edition number "x" and "x+1". What we can hope for is a blurr -- "the transition seems to have occurred between edition number "x" and edition number "y"." From there we can try to fill in the blank spaces as more information comes available.

What this can do for us is give us some assurance that a piece with a number below "x" will have a rod, above "y" will not, and between "x" and "y", maybe.

The world is not black-or-white, but shades of grey, right Greydawn? :-)

I intend to let these threads run for a little while longer, then have them closed. At that point I will summarize them. Afterward, new entries could be made if they shed new light on the boundaries, but it would be unncessary to post data that do not force a change to the hypothesis about "x" and "y". This will make things a bit more efficient and easier to keep up with.

When I saw the title of this thread I thought "Wow!" somebody misses Rod already (today's his first day out on his lighthousing trip) and they started a topic on whether others did as well.
