NE Lighthouse Pilgrimage - 05/31/99 06:30 PM

I just returned from the family's summer 1999 lighthouse tour from Indianapolis to Cape Cod (and a few other places)!

Sat. May 22 - Left Indianapolis and pit-stopped in Hershey to see Chocolate World and hit a shop or two. Continued North to Allentown to sleep overnight.

Sun., May 23 - Caught I287 to I-95. In doing so, saw Tarrytown (NY) light. Continued along I-95 stopping (despite the constant and sometimes heavy rain) to see

a.) New Haven Light - also saw another light from a distance in New Haven - any help on ID?
b.) Guilford although visibility was awful
c.) Old Saybrook
d.) New London - for both lights
e.) Mystic for lunch and quick shopping stop
f.) Stonington Harbor

Then continued on Rt. 1 through RI to:

a.) Point Judith
b.) Beavertail
c.) Castle Hill
d.) Rose Island in the water from the bridge

Then drove onto Mass and the Cape to our accomodations.

Mon., May 24 - Rain was still a large threat, so it was decided to drive up the coast to Plymouth to see the original settlement as well as Minot's Ledge, Scituate and Boston Harbour. As well as a little shopping along the way, of course. Was treated to quite the storm at our oceanfront lodging.

Tues., May 25 - Spent the day on Nantucket, visiting shops as well as three lights - Brant Point, Sankaty Head amd Great Pt.

Wed., May 26 - Hit some shops around area and went to Martha's Vineyard. Saw East Chop and West Chop lights and drove to Gay Head and Edgartown as well as Oak Bluffs.

Thurs., May 27 - Headed towards Chatham, Nauset, Highland and P'town. Loved all three lights especially Highland, which we toured. Hit some shops along the way including one in Eastham. Spent remainder of day around ocean.

Fri., May 28 - Headed out in a.m. towards Springfield to see the Basketball Hall of Fame. Then on to Buffalo and Niagara Falls for the night. Was treated to large fireworks show over the night falls (every Friday night).

Sat., May 29 - Walked across border to see Falls from Canadian side and spent an hour or so walking around. Was going to go to Fort Niagara State Park, but thought that we'd better start towards home. Stopped to see the Buffalo light. Then also at Dunkirk, NY and Presque Isle, PA. Continued through Cleveland, Columbus and back to Indy!

Thirty-two lights in all and nine states and a Canadian province. Will try to include a few more days for some more oceanside R-and-R in next trip!

Great trip Steve!

Going to look at your travels to see how we might be able to work some of it into our trip in a month. You certainly covered some ground in a week. We are heading out for a 2 week trip to Maine, with a stop in Boston.
