Are your legs ready?

Okay,all you NJ lighthouse tour folks,

Have you calculated how many steps there are in each of the lighthouses we will be climbing on Wednesday? Are your legs ready for this challenge? How are you preparing for the trips up and down those winding stairs????
How many stairs in all?

Sea Girt's # of stairs...
Absecon's # of stairs...
Hereford Inlet's # of stairs...
Cape May's # of stairs...

This is my tactic for getting prepared: Each day I am climbing the stairs at my school 8 times..so 52x8=416. My legs are already asking me what on earth I am doing.....

Help me fill in the blanks for number of stairs in these lights...the school bell is ringing and I have to scoot..

Sandy Hook has 95 steps and a 9 rung ladder. So that would be 104 in my book.

Also, don't bother counting the steps at Barnegat- it's not on the tour. Time constraints kept it off- along with the fact that heretical as it might sound Barnegat, Cape May and Absecon are very similar in the experience they will provide.

Although, considering Barnegat's situation at this time it might be more unique than before- the shoring up of it's base has not had the desired effect as of yet. The lighthouse is leaning. They say there is no imminent danger to it, but it still needs some work. At this time they are studying the situation

Hi Nana,
When you get to the top of Absecon, which is NJ's tallest light and the 3rd tallest in the United States, you get a great little card that says Congratulations you made it. Sorry don't remember how many steps but it was a lot. Al and I climbed it last September. See you in Baltimore.

I'm not too worried about the steps. I'm planning on someone carrying me!!!!!

I'm not carrying anyone else, just the camera. LOL on finding someone to haul you up those steps....Digger!

The count for Cape May is 218. I believe only 199 can be climbed though. The site lists it as 199 steps on the Spiral Staircase with a total of 218.

This includes I believe the steps up into the Lantern Room which cannot be entered or climbed. You can go outside just below the Lantern Room. There is a chance, depending on how dark it is, to see Brandywine shoal and East Point from there. It can be done on a clear night. Lets hope for a clear night.

I am preparing myself for climbs of my life. I just ask that you bring a O2 bottle to get up those last 2 lights of the day. I can at least look forward to one good nights sleep while in Baltimore.

Bring on those towers, I'm game to try. We
climbed all the towers in Oregon last summer
and had no problems. We also took our time
and were not pushed for time. However, My
legs will make it. I can't wait. Do we get
to plant a flag for reaching the peak???

I've been lifting patients for 25 years now and have the scars from back surgery to prove it.
We've got a scale we use to classify our "heavy" patients.....
Anything under 200 lbs. = normal
200-300 lbs. = "sea cow"
300-400 lbs. = "whale"
400-500 lbs. = "killer whale"
500+ "the dreaded Moby Dick"

From the pictures...I don't think Digger looks that heavy. It would be worth a framed original

I have two but they don't work on the up trips ,if I could onle get to the top I
have no problem getting down.

Medicman, I have seen Digger upclose and personal and he's pretty close to that "sea cow" weight! (LOL, just kidding Digger!)

Hopefully he can climb on his own two feet!

Start stretching those leg muscles Nana, not long now!

I'm curious- how many steps are there to the other Lighthouses in NJ?

Did you get to climb all the ones you got to?

How did the rest of the day go? I know hoe Sandy Hook went but am curious as to how the rest came off.

We at Sandy Hook/ NJLHS want to thank all the visitors we had this past Wednesday.

You spent almost $900 in souveners and donatioins, not including the extremely nice donation of the O'Briens for the NJLHS of $550.

I know they will enjoy their New Point Loma.

Thanks again to all, and I'm glad I got to talk to some of my fellow Forumites at least.

There were a few I missed, but it's hard to be in three places at once- only John, Paul and some of the other very hard working people seem to be able to do that.

I hope to get to some other HL function in the near future.
