Do you own an Artist Proof?

Do you own an Artist Proof? - 04/16/03 09:22 PM

I was always intrigued with APs and how people got them? (Boy, I would sure love to have the Old Field with the bare tree!)
Some people have revealed the luck of walking into a store, and buying it off the shelf.
Another person told me about winning a Montauk from Harbour Lights?
A Cold Spring Harbor was auctioned off on the lighthouse tour bus at the Reunion.
Anyone want to share how they acquired theirs and which one it is?
I'm sure John or Paul can fill us in on how many are made, and given to Reps, etc. I believe I've heard there may be up to ten for each edition(?).
I remember BY walking around with a Statue of Liberty that had taken a few spills along the way.

I have a Cape Lookout AP that I got when I was calling around looking for some "green water" pieces about 3 years ago. The store said that they didn't have and didn't know anyone that had any, but, said they had an artist proof that their rep had given them and they asked me if I was interested. I bought it because it was an AP and still have it. I've managed to get all the "green water" pieces except Barnegat since then but no more APs. I'd trade the AP in a minute for a gw Barnegat to complete my collection but have had no takers. I sometimes wonder looking at the Cape Lookput AP how you really know that you have an AP. It looks the same except no serial number. That's the only difference I can see except no box, also.

I don't have an AP but would love to add one to my collection. In general, do APs have more or less value (which might be intrinsic) than a numbered edition?

I do not own an Artist Proof. I wish I did but it hasn't happend yet.

I see very, very few of them on eBay. Usually they go for more than I'm willing to spend.

Collector's World in Eastham, MA has auctioned off a few in the past. I don't have one, it is usually too rich for my blood.

I have been lucky enough to have 6 AP's in collection. My first AP was just dumb luck and was the fifth LH that I bought. I picked it up in a local shop because it had a long rod, it was signed and I kind of liked it. It was #109 Cape Blanco and had no box. The best part is the I got it at a 20% discount off list.

The other five were from another local shop that called one day and asked if I would be interested and I said I would like to look at them. They turned out to be a complete set of the Pharos that were only avaailable in England at the time. They also didn't have boxes, or COA's. My belief is that they were rep pieces that the rep put on the market.

I have one, and just got it this year at the Nancy event at Edelweiss. It is the unreleased Half Moon Reef Tx. No box or paperwork, but when I bought it the store owner said the Rep would provide. Having read the previous posts though this seems highly unlikely.

I bought it more because I liked the piece, then realized it was an AP.

My wife and I got the Cold Spring Harbor that was auctioned off on the bus tour after the Providence
reunion. It is the only one we have to date.

I have an AP set of the Pharos Collection .... all five (5) pieces have "AP" on the flags. My local dealer did a great job in acquiring them for me!

Re: Do you own an Artist Proof? - 04/22/03 04:11 AM

Was able to add 3 APs to my collection on Saturday. Went back to the same place I got Half Moon to check on the promised box, and found they still had 5 different APs left from the Nancy signing. I got Pharos, Colosus, and Dry Tortugas.
Looked at St Joseph Point but it was had some minor damage on the roof, (not sure of just paint missing or a chip). They also had Ancolte Key.

Re: Do you own an Artist Proof? - 04/30/03 08:42 PM

When I started this topic, I had just won a bid on 3 APs that were listed on ebay but not highlighted as an AP unless you read the details. Obviously not many people went to the trouble to drill down a level so I was lucky to find a treasure. 2 of the 3, I got actually had on the sticker on the bottom that stated it was a HL artist proof. I don't remember anyone stating this before (although I'm sure others with the same ones have them).
My catch was Sanibel, Drum Pt, and Middle Bay. Needless to say, I'm very pleased. laugh Bob

You're lucky I swore off going to eBay for a while... because I already have Thomas Pt and Middle Bay AP's and have been wanted to find a Drum Pt AP... I just missed getting one last year at Alpena by about 10 minutes.

Re: Do you own an Artist Proof? - 05/01/03 12:53 AM

I have AP's of Morris Island, Then and Now and the orginal version of Grosse Point Il. Mr. Younger told myself and the Rep, in Greenville SC. That only 10 of Old Field Ny were made with the bare tree and stopped due to breakeage. Some how, one of the 10 slipped out of the factory and a Man picked it up @ a auction, for $10,000.00. So, I find it hard to believe that many, if anybody walked in and purchased one of the self!!!!!

Bringin' this to the top.
I now own several APs. Some LI ones and others as stated above. My friends here on the CF have been good to me. But with the recent flood on the market and ebay, I'm now pretty sure most of us has at least one? confused
