Collector Forums Photo Contest

Get out your photo albums and cameras. Here's a chance to win a 2002 Harbour Lights Limited Edition Lighthouse or one of several 2002 Little Lights of Mine. Deadline for entries to be received is January 31, 2002. Judging will take place during the first week of February by Harbour Lights and winners will be announced by February 15, 2002.

1. Each person may submit up to two entries in each of the two categories:

a. Lighthouse images and lighthouse related images.
b. Any other images - people, landscapes, cityscapes, etc.

2. Lighthouse images are those taken of a lighthouse or at a lighthouse where any
part of a lighthouse or related items shows -- a Fresnel lens, lighthouse
staircase, etc.

3. Photos of a non-lighthouse nature. This category was established for those who
do not live near a lighthouse.

4. We will divide those submitting photos for the contest into one of two groups:

a. Those with personal photo gallery at HarbourLights.com
b. All other registered members of the Collector Forums as of 1/31/02

5. All entries must be received by January 31, 2002.

6. Only photos taken by the person submitting them are eligible.

7. The judges reserve the right to recategorize an entry.

8. Entrants agree to grant Harbour Lights the right to publish their entries at
HarbourLights.com and/or in other publications. Entries will be displayed at
HarbourLights.com starting on February 4. The photographer will not be identified
in this display until after judging has been completed.

9. Entries may be in color or black and white. Submissions may be made as
photographic prints, digital prints or either scanned or original digital images.
All images will be judged as digital images of approximately the same size.

10. Entries may be submitted by email or by regular mail. With each submission
include your full name, complete mailing address, and email address.

· Send digital images electronically by email to:
Webmaster@HarbourLights.com If scanning print images,
set the resolution to 72 or 100 dpi.

· If you do not have a scanner, send photographic prints by mail to: John
Chidester, PO Box 4742, Scottsdale, AZ 85259-4742. Include a self-addressed,
stamped envelope if you want the print returned. Do not submit prints larger
than 8x10"; prints 5 x 7" or smaller are preferred.

11. Decisions of the judges will be final.

12. Prizes will be awarded in both photographic categories and to both groups of
photographers. A total of 4 First Place awards will be presented. Judges may
award any number Honorable Mentions they feel have extra merit.

· First Place each category - A 2002 Harbour Lights Limited Edition lighthouse
selected by Harbour Lights.

· Honorable Mention(s) in each category - A 2002 Harbour Lights Little Light Of
Mine selected by Harbour Lights.

Re: Collector Forums Photo Contest - 12/12/01 02:46 AM

Okay you shutter bugs, this is your chance to win some nice prizes. With the cooperation of Harbour Lights, particularly Kim and Maureen, and of course a lot of help from John C, we were able to muster up a great contest. We all look forward to seeing some wonderful photography from you. Please double check the rules and have fun getting those great shots taken and sent in. Good luck everyone!

After seeing the pictures in the gallery I'm not sure I can compete. But what the heck nothing ventured nothing gained. I'll send my favorite picture in.

Re: Collector Forums Photo Contest - 12/12/01 07:11 AM

Dale,

If I read the rules correctly you won't have to compete against the creme de la creme.

Just against people like yourself. Of course some of those who don't have galleries, probably should.

Re: Collector Forums Photo Contest - 12/12/01 02:48 PM

Right you are Dennis - Those with Galleries of their own (not just a picture in the Guest Gallery) will compete against one another - those without a Gallery will be competing against each other.

Special thanks to Torchbearer for coming up with the idea and all the work on this contest.

Great idea! This gives me a chance to go back though my numerous photo albums I've collected in my 2 short years of lighthousing.

Thanks to Tim, and thanks to Paul for running the first one on the Forums. Didn't want to forget Paul's efforts!

By the way I don't compete.

Thanks Tourchbearer for setting this up and JC for his work and especially Harbour Lights for the great prizes. I can't wait to see the pictures. John, will all of the entries be posted?

That's my plan, Dale.

Re: Collector Forums Photo Contest - 12/13/01 11:19 PM

Got the first entries yesterday by email. I'm sure lots of you have 'winners' in that shoebox or photo album (depending on how organized you are).

Take some time this weekend to go through and pick out 2 lighthouse and 2 non-lighthouse photos for the contest.

Thought I would bring this back to the top. Thanks again for all the entries!

Re: Collector Forums Photo Contest - 12/27/01 02:21 AM

I'm looking forward to submitting some photos to the photo contest, but wanted to get a little additional information before I prepare the files for submission. The 72 dpi was pretty obvious, but 1) do you have preferred pixel dimensions, e.g. 400x600; 2) a maximum pixel dimension in either direction; and 3) a maximum file size, e.g. 150 Kbytes, assuming that you'd like to have the contest submissions in the form of jpegs?

Looking forward to either receiving an e-mail or seeing something posted on the forum in response.

Best regards,
Gary Martin aka lighthouse_photo

Hi Gary -

72 dpi and the longest dimension about 450-500 pixels would be great.

Thanks, John. I work on a large monitor with screen dimensions of 1024 x1280 and before I sent you something large, I wanted to make certain of what you were looking for.

Re: Collector Forums Photo Contest - 01/09/02 03:51 AM

They're slowly coming in!

How about YOU!? Check the rules and directions at the top of this post. If you've got some good photos of lighthouses or whatever, we'd all like to see them.

Re: Collector Forums Photo Contest - 01/14/02 06:55 PM

A few more picked up today at the post office and one arriving by email.

ATTN: Jimmy Troutt - received your package by mail. Need an email address and description of the two non-lighthouse photos.

Thanks.

Re: Collector Forums Photo Contest - 01/14/02 09:25 PM

It's great to hear photos are coming in John. Okay everyone, only 17 days left to submit photos for the contest!

Re: Collector Forums Photo Contest - 01/20/02 05:33 PM

12 more days to get your entries in folks. You 'pros' with Galleries need to get moving. Not a lot of representation in these parts of the contest yet.

Re: Collector Forums Photo Contest - 01/23/02 06:07 AM

Entries are still coming in - got 4 more by US mail today.

Joel Horace of WA - got yours, but I don't have an email address to acknowledge receipt.

Others who submitted by email or mail (except for those sent in last 4 days) should have now received an email acknowledgement from me. If not, email me

Just a reminder of Rule 4b. You must be a registered user of the Collector Forums by January 31. If you've submitted photos by email or snail mail and aren't yet a member, please take a minute to register and get at least 1 post under your belt.

Thanks...

Re: Collector Forums Photo Contest - 01/26/02 05:57 AM

John, I just left the postoffice from where I mailed my photo entry, I can only hope that you recieve it in time. Knowing how slow snail mail can be, it's going to be close. No excuses, I just procrastinated. And after returning home from the postoffice I remembered that I hadn't put my e-mail address with it. Please tell me that you can do that for me when you recieve my letter inclosed with the photos.

Thanks Stephanie

Re: Collector Forums Photo Contest - 01/26/02 02:15 PM

Hey John, OK, since I'm one of those with a gallery that you were referring to that hasn't been represented well by the submissions, I just sent you the first of the two non-lighthouse images by e-mail. I'll ship you the other non-lighthouse shot later today... decided that I wanted to rescan the slide using the new Nikon scanner... and will follow that with the two lighthouse shots. I've decided what one of those will be... just need to decide which of the remaining couple that I've reduced the list of possible submissions to will be the one going in to you.

Looking forward to starting to see some of what everyone has been sending in up on the HL webpage soon!!! Should be very interesting!

Best regards,

Stephanie, I can't imagine it taking anymore than 3 or 4 days for your photos to reach John. Thank you for your participation.

It's not too late for everyone else to send in your shots. Thanks again for everyone who has participated so far, and good luck!

Re: Collector Forums Photo Contest - 01/26/02 05:48 PM

Nice to be here and registered! Gary Martin told me about Harbour Lights and your contest. I'll be entering 4 photos in your contest, 2 of which will be ones of the South Haven, Michigan lighthouse that I took in Sept. 2001 when my husband and I were visiting with Gary in Kalamazoo and photographing together. The 2 others might be of a very reflective building in downtown Kalamazoo that I took during the same timeframe; haven't quite decided yet but I'd better get a move on! Gary also told me that all the photos don't have to be sent at the same time.

Not a problem with the photos arriving at a different time, as long as John Chidester receives them no later than January 31, 2002. Thanks again for your participation in the contest!

Re: Collector Forums Photo Contest - 01/30/02 06:14 AM

How are the reciepts coming for the photo contest, John? I still owe you one more lighthouse shot. Have it narrowed down to 3 at this point, I think and I suspect that I'll ship it off to you prior to the chat tomorrow night so mine will all be in. As I haven't heard from you regarding the others that I've e-mailed to you, I hope that that is an indication of the ISP problems that you've been having and not that they've lost them somewhere in the ether!? Please let me know when you get a chance.

Thanks,
Gary

Re: Collector Forums Photo Contest - 01/30/02 11:47 PM

I'm new to the web site and the forums. We live and sail at the Jersey shore and love lighthouses. We'll be getting close by boat to some of the more obscure ones in the middle of the Raritan Bay, so maybe for the next photo contest, I'll have some of those. For now, I'm going to enter another picture from a Sunday afternoon visit to Twin Lights (Navesink). I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's pictures.

Re: Collector Forums Photo Contest - 01/31/02 06:15 PM

Got mine in and hope to see all of the entries on Monday. I'm glad they have two catagories. I saw some great shots in the galleries even the guest gallery looked good. Some of the winter shots makes me want to come up North and see some of the lights in a winter setting. However, that moment of insanity passes and I remember how cold it really is up there. Warmth (75 today) is the reason I moved to Houston in first place. I'm glad I'm not a Judge and have to choose which is the best. It's great to have some other Newbie company in the forums.

Re: Collector Forums Photo Contest - 02/01/02 02:22 AM

Hey there Chuck aka Bigdragon... come on up, the water's fine!!!!! If you're a penguin. Although it may have changed out at the lake today with the winter storm that came through last night, last weekend there was zero ice in the lake or on the lighthouses!!! When they do have ice on them, however, they are beautiful on a clear, cold blue sky day. Last winter when I was out to South Haven photographing between Christmas and New Year the air temp was running in the range of -15 to -25 and you don't want to know what the wind chill took it down to. Nevertheless, if you ever get up this direction, summer or winter, let some of us here know you're coming! Sorry, but no winter lights shots from me for the HL photo contest.

Re: Collector Forums Photo Contest - 02/01/02 02:34 AM

Hey John, what time zone is the cutoff in for those last minute submitters? Arizona time?

Come on everyone who hasn't submitted... fire up those scanners!!! There are almost 900 people registered on here and the last I heard, John hadn't had submissions from most of them. What's the tally of submitters up to, John - broken 50?

Gary

Re: Collector Forums Photo Contest - 02/01/02 07:38 AM

Well, I just clicked onto the HL website at a little after 12:30 and notice on the home page that the banner announcing the photo contest is gone. Guess that means that at midnight eastern time submissions came to a close?

What was the final tally, John. I managed to drum up a couple of friends who shoot the Michigan lights with me to register and submit. Wish I could have gotten more for the contest, but I tried.

Looking forward to seeing what was submitted soon!

Re: Collector Forums Photo Contest - 02/01/02 02:17 PM

I believe the final count will be over 60 entrants and perhaps 200 total photos.

There are a LOT of wonderful pictures among the entrants.

Good luck everyone!

Re: Collector Forums Photo Contest - 02/01/02 08:33 PM

Wow, 200 photos! I'm glad I don't have to Judge them. Thanks for the invite up north Gary, but I think I'll stay where it's a little warmer. I've been in the snow and ice thing before and couldn't wait for it to go away. We still have our snow shovel and insulated boots just in case we need them here in Houston. But as 007 says never say never, we could find ourselves up there for a regional and I always take my camera. I will be shooting some of the California lights in April while I'm at Asilomar. I hope to put some of your night advice to work. When we went to Matagroda a couple of weeks ago we took some night shots following your notes. They looked real nice for a first time and my wife was pleased with the results also. I worked the camera and she worked the timer it was great. The fog was in so there was a halo around everything, but the night sounds of the fog horns and water were cool. We both enjoyed the experience, it was to bad we couldn't get any night shots of the Matagorda lighthouse. We saw it during the day and the day was overcast and windy. The only problem was I had to shoot around some orange spray paint. The lighthouse had been vandalized by 3 boys who were camping on the island. Fortunately they were caught and are being sent to the big house for a few years. Get this, they were Boy Scout. As a current scout leader I am saddened by this whole thing and wonder where the boys adult leaders were. They can't remove the paint until they have gone through a bunch of paper work and studies. It's a state park, a wildlife protected area and a historical landmark. This mean everyone must agree before anything is done. It's a shame.

Chuck

Re: Collector Forums Photo Contest - 02/02/02 02:49 AM

Hey Chuck, you can keep Houston - I lived there for 14 years and NEVER got used to the heat and humidity of the blasted place, not to mention the traffic that turns what the rest of us call freeways into linear parking lots twice daily! I'll take the snow any day. You can always put on another sweater, but once you shed the last shred down there, that's it!

Glad the suggestions on the night photography are helping some. Keep at it and by all means, let me know if you have any questions.

If you want some suggestions on photographing Pigeon Point, let me know either on one of the forums or by e-mail. I shoot it several times a year, along with Pt Bonita, Pt Montara, Santa Cruz, Pt Pinos, and Big Sur when I'm out in the Bay area on business. To whet your appetite a little for photographing on the left coast, the shot below is a sunrise shot at Pigeon Point in November of 2000.

For those of you have commented on the other thread I posted for Suzanne here on the General Forum, thanks for the compliments on my photography. If you're curious, this one didn't make my final cut either although it came close.

Re: Collector Forums Photo Contest - 02/02/02 03:41 AM

Would you believe this is one of my favorites of Gary's? I not only have a gorgeous large double matted and framed print of it hanging on the wall near one of my computers at home (which I bought as a Christmas present to myself a year ago), but just before my husband and I went to visit him last September during the time his photos were on display in a Michigan art gallery's show, I ordered a smaller one that I had the gallery mat and frame for me. That came home with me when we came home and it's hanging on the workcube wall, so I get to see it at work and at home!!!!

BTW, I only use Teresa in my signature so people won't think I'm a male named Terrence with a nickname of Terry but a female named Teresa with a nickname of Terry!

Scanning, scanning, scanning....

I think I scanned and resized about 80 pictures today.

Looks like we'll end up with 199 photos in all.

I still hope to have the pages open tomorrow. But there is still maybe 6-7 hours of work to go. Looks like a late night tonight.
