This may be a dumb question, but has anyone ever displayed their HL lighthouses in the window sill? I have my Hatteras in one and I really like the way it looks. However, I am afraid the sun will eventually fade the colors. Any thoughts or experiences are appreciated!

I have never put mine in a window, but I would bet money that the UV from the sun would eventually fade the paint as I have seen HLs in dealers windows or in places where the sunlight could reach them, and the colors of those pieces were NOT as vivid.

(HLs in Dealers windows, like Hallmarks and collector shops.... wow, that is a thing of the past!)

I would not recommend putting it in direct sunlight unless you can easily replace it with another one, if indeed the colors fade and you want to replace it. I assume, that we are talking about a Cape Hatteras GLOW version and not the limited edition HL102 version!

We had a local dealer who displayed Harbour Lights in her front window and there was noticeable fading on the side of the lighthouses facing the window. This may have been more of a problem with older pieces because I understand that the newer pieces had a "better" paint applied.

I think there may be a special plastic film type material that could be applied to glass that may help filter out harmful rays. I believe some museums use this on certain windows and they could maybe tell you more about it.

Yes, I too think many GLOWS far exceed the original limiteds.

A lot depend on the type of glass in your windows. If you have a window with the right "E" value UV blockers, they will keep out the harmfuls rays that will fade anything painted.

I have Andersen windows in my house. They are one of the best companies that provide windows and door the keep the harmful rays out.

I can remember seeing a poor ugly little Ida Lewis Rock, RI sculpture sitting in the window of a gift shop in Newport, OR in direct sunlight bouncing off Yaquina Bay, completely bleached out and void of any color, and thinking how sad that no one would ever buy it...of course, it wasn't exactly a stunning piece WITH color...

I would not put any light that you value in any window. My public libary has display windows that face north. Items displayed in these windows for long periods are very faded even though they do not receive any direct sunlight.
